Prescribed medications used to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis may provide you with some relief, but other natural options won’t cause so many side effects. Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes the skin cells to grow at an increased rate. This can result in the formation of thick and rough patches of skin. What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda balances your doshas (energy or life force) through herbs and other natural treatments. The main aim of Ayurvedic medicines is to bring the body back into harmony after becoming imbalanced. By following Ayurvedic principles, one can naturally return to a state of homeostasis while living a balanced lifestyle.

Ayurvedic medicine strongly focuses on the balance of one’s mind and body. This ancient Vedic practice is rooted in the belief that everything around us has energy – including us humans. The three energies we have come to learn about are known as doshas, which are:


  • Vata energy
  • Pitta energy
  • Kapha energy

These three types of energy affect how we experience our world and interact with other people. When they are balanced, we feel mentally and physically healthy, like a tree with solid roots extending into the earth.

According to Ayurveda, stress and poor health can cause your pitta, Vata, and Kapha doshas to become unbalanced. The goal of Ayurveda is to have a balance of all three doshas to stay healthy.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine that focuses on how to help a person heal from within. While these principles are not mainstream in Western medicine, Ayurveda is growing in popularity and awareness.


Ayurveda and psoriasis

Ayurvedic medicine uses ingredients to treat psoriasis. For example, both turmeric and aloe vera have been used to aid the treatment of the disease. While Ayurveda may be able to help people suffering from psoriasis in some circumstances, more work needs to be done in this area. A systematic review of clinical trials involving Ayurvedic medication was not found due to a lack of information.

People with psoriasis may benefit from Ayurvedic topical treatments like turmeric. Turmeric is one of the most common ingredients featured in these traditional applications. It comes from a plant root, similar to ginger’s, and can be cooked as a spice or mixed with a paste ready to be applied to your skin.

Psoriasis treatment in Ayurveda differs from person to person and cannot be generalized into one specific treatment option. It depends on the breakout severity and how long they last. For example, if someone has mild breakouts, tropical solutions might be suitable.

Ayurvedic practitioners typically focus on balancing the three doshas. Having balance enables one to heal. A person can keep the doshas in balance by reducing stress and anxiety.

Meditation, breathing deeply in slow motion for better oxygen intake is one way of healing yourself. Or simply putting yourself into a solitary situation and letting go of your thoughts is another good trick to get rid of some stress.

For people suffering from psoriasis, stress can be a potential trigger for flare-ups as it increases a person’s level of cortisol, another term for the stress hormone. When cortisol levels rise, they can cause an immune response that is an itchy and flaky skin condition. Learning these relaxation techniques can help combat the effects of cortisol upon your body so that you may have fewer flare-ups.

Nutritional changes

Vegetarians practice Ayurveda, and the foods to avoid in this diet include high carbohydrate foods and products that contain large amounts of sugar.

In addition, Ayurveda also suggests that people avoid eating foods that are too salty, sour, or acidic. They also recommend a person heeds to his/herself by responding to urges such as wanting to use the defecate or urinate.

Online diet surveys may not directly treat psoriasis. Still, a study of dietary habits among patients at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) School of medicine[1] concluded that specialized diets such as vegan and paleo or high-protein and low carb diets might be healthful for people with psoriasis. This study supports ayurvedic dietary choices as potentially effective for psoriasis people.


Tropical solutions

While many people with psoriasis also benefit from turmeric, many other similar compounds and herbs are available and will likely confer positive results. Ayurvedic herbs that have been used to treat psoriasis include; garlic, aloe vera, black nightshade, Boswellia, and guggul. Jasmine flower paste has also been known to be effective against psoriasis. The National Psoriasis Foundation has advised people to use creams containing 0.5% aloe vera content to soothe their skin[2].

Evidence supporting other treatments for psoriasis is purely anecdotal. While they may support the health of other patients, there is no research to support their use as treatments or removing or decreasing the symptoms of psoriasis. They may be tried as long as they provide relief and do not cause any side effects. A person with psoriasis can consider using these treatments alongside recommended remedies as they are complimentary. People should get advice from their doctors before including Ayurvedic components in their diet.

Body washes and lotions

To keep the area around psoriasis clean, regular bathing is necessary. Additionally, it can be soothing, and people with psoriasis have reported fewer flares after bathing. Natural formulas for soothing the itching, such as moisturizing oils like coconut or olive oils, may help to soften and soothe the skin. 


How Ayuverda explains psoriasis

According to the International Journal Of Green Pharmacy, practitioners of Ayurveda classify psoriasis as a chronic condition. It’s called kushtha and is considered incurable and intractable. [3] Ayurvedic texts show that psoriasis usually stems from an imbalance of the two doshas in our energy system. These are known as Vata and Kapha doshas.

The explanation of Vata dosha related to psoriasis states that Vata is related to bodily functions and could contribute to the dryness and scaling of the skin. However, Kapha represents growth and may explain the inflammation of itching and rapid turnover.


The lack of balance between these two energies can cause toxins to build up in a person’s body, leading to inflammation. The Ayurveda treatment’s goal is to balance the toxin energy and body tissues with herbs to restore the sound power in a person’s body. 


Scalp psoriasis treatment in Ayurveda

Scalp psoriasis is a prevalent condition of the skin that has small, elevated red spots on the scalp’s surface. It can be a single spot or several widespread on the scalp. Scaly patches of the skin, itchy sores, and hair loss can develop on the scalp. It can be mild or severe, long-lasting, and cause unbearable itching. 

Scalp treatment for psoriasis varies depending on how long it has been there and what part is affected. The face, head, and neck are often treated differently because of their visibility compared to the rest of the body. Psoriasis treatments work to slow the growth of skin cells and eliminate scales. There are various topical treatments, phototherapy, and oral or injected medications.


Nail psoriasis treatment in Ayurveda

Psoriasis is more than skin deep and can also affect fingernails and toenails. The report states that nail changes are only seen in people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Ayurveda treatment for nail psoriasis depends on how bad the problem of your nail is. There are many ways to treat this disease, like changing your food habits lifestyle. You can also consult your doctor for further evaluation.




Risks and safety considerations

Although Ayurveda has been around for a long, very little research is available to accept or reject claims. Studies on Ayurveda are of trim types and do not provide the kind of results that support any conclusion. This makes it challenging to say that Ayurveda helps reduce episodes of psoriasis or the physical effects. However, most people have reported that it does. 

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t consider Ayurveda products as medications but dietary supplements. This means they don’t have to undergo the same rigorous safety and effectiveness testing as other medications. The national center for complementary and effective health (NCCIH) advises [4] that due to unsafe levels of lead, mercury, and arsenic, certain Ayurveda products could be toxic when consumed. 

Consumers need to take caution when using Ayurveda products. The marking “all-natural” does not mean it is safe; you should check in with your doctor before using these products as substitutes for other medical treatments.


Conclusion

Ayurveda is an ancient medical practice, but unfortunately, its effectiveness is unclear due to a lack of research on its safety. There are also botanical and organic products such as turmeric and aloe vera that people with psoriasis can already use. Meditation and yoga practices can also help alleviate some of their sufferings.

Although some scientific evidence suggests that Ayurveda could help treat psoriatic skin, the lack of large-scale studies hinders further evaluation. If psoriasis symptoms become too severe or do not respond to alternatives, you should consult your doctor for additional treatments.
